According to Techdows, a new Office Viewer for Microsoft Edge is currently being tested on the latest browser Insider builds. As the name suggests, the Office Viewer allows users to see Microsoft Office documents within the web browser. Users can currently test the tool on Edge Dev build 92.0.873.1 and newer. This makes viewing documents more efficient because it removes the current Office Viewer extension that is needed on current Edge builds. It is worth noting the tool has some limitations compared to the Office Viewer extension. Chief among them is the ability to only see documents from Office web apps and not OneDrive. I hope Microsoft adds support for OneDrive documents before the feature reaches end users. In other words, users will be able to view Word documents in the same way they currently can view PDFs. The feature is turned off by default on test builds, so if you’re an Insider you can activate it by heading to the Download menu of Microsoft Edge Settings.
PDF Viewer Improvements
We recently reported on the PDF Viewer changes coming to Chromium Edge. Perhaps the standout feature coming to an upcoming Edge release is the ability to pick up where you left off. At the moment, both Edge and Chrome will start a PDF at the beginning if you stop reading and close the window. In the next version of Edge, Microsoft will add a tool that automatically resumes where you closed the document.
